The project achieved its intended goal. All the 1,250 families planned to be reached in the project proposal were actually reached. The target families were divided into two batches; batch one consisted of 900 families and batch two numbered 350 families. They were drawn from 22 IDP camps at Garasbaley district in Mogadishu.  The distribution exercise of the wash kits took place at the IDP settings of the beneficiaries. The distribution task completed smoothly and without incident; the beneficiaries stood in queues in an orderly manner to collect the kits with members from the local police guarding the distribution site. Each family received a package of wash kits comprising of the following items:

  • Plastic bucket and lid (15 liter food grade)
  • Aquatab water purification tablets
  • Bathing soap
  • Laundry soap
  • Tooth paste
  • Toothbrush
  • Shampoo
  • Comb
  • Nail clippers
  • Washable cotton cloth (menstrual cloth)
  • Women & girls’ underwear
  • And Lotion for infants/children

After distribution of the wash kits and subsequent awareness on how to use them given by OSPAD field staff, the beneficiaries can use the kits in the most appropriate way.  The water purification tablets have been of special importance to the beneficiaries. They had health challenges from drinking unclean water which at most times caused diarrhea and other water borne diseases. These diseases were responsible for most mortality and morbidity in the IDP settings, especially among children under five. Thanks to the wash kits distribution project, this threat has now been cleared and the beneficiaries will lead better and healthier lives.
